Plant Care Guides / Indoor
The ZZ plant is a near-indestructible indoor plant with glossy, dark green leaves on smooth, upright stems. It thrives on neglect, copes with low light, and stores water so well that it shrugs off the odd missed watering. For a striking plant that asks almost nothing of you, the ZZ is hard to beat.
The ZZ stores water in thick underground rhizomes, a bit like potatoes, which is its secret to surviving dry spells and the reason it can go weeks without water and still look fresh. Note that all parts are toxic if chewed, so keep it out of reach of small children and pets.
It handles everything from low light to bright, indirect light, which makes it one of the best plants for a dim corner or office. It grows faster in brighter light. Keep it out of harsh direct sun.
Let the soil dry out almost completely between waterings, and water even less in winter. The most common mistake is too much water, so when in doubt, wait. Room humidity is fine.
Feed lightly, with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once or twice through the growing season. It needs very little.
Use a free-draining potting mix. The rhizomes can fill and even crack a pot in time, so repot every couple of years when it gets crowded.
