Weeping Sage (Buddleja auriculata) Care Guide

Indigenous  |  Easy Care  |  Small tree / large shrub

The weeping sage is one of the most beautifully scented indigenous trees you can grow. It is a graceful, fast-growing, evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy dark green leaves, silvery on the underside, on softly arching, weeping branches. From late autumn through winter and into early spring, it covers itself in heavy sprays of small, cream-coloured flowers with one of the loveliest, sweetest fragrances of any plant on this coast.

Good to know

On a still winter morning, the scent carries right across the garden. It handles wind, drought and poor soil once established, and its non-aggressive root system makes it safe near structures. An excellent choice for new gardens where you want quick, scented screening.

Size

Up to 4 m, easily kept smaller with pruning.

Growth rate

Fast.

Best uses

Screen, informal hedge, large shrub border, scented garden feature. Especially valuable for winter fragrance.

Light / aspect

Full sun to light shade. Flowers best in sun.

Soil

Not fussy. Grows in most soils, including sandy coastal sand. Added compost improves performance but is not essential.

Water requirements

Water regularly while establishing. Once settled, it is properly drought-resistant and needs little supplementary water.

Feeding

A light feed in spring is enough. It is not a hungry plant.

Pruning

Prune after flowering to keep it tidy and encourage denser growth. It can become woody and sparse if left alone for years, but responds well to a hard cut-back.
