Plant Care Guides / Indoor
The string of pearls is one of the most eye-catching trailing succulents, with long stems strung with round, pea-like leaves that spill over the edge of a pot. It is a beautiful plant for a hanging basket or a high shelf, and like most succulents its golden rule is simple: do not over-water it.
Each little pearl is a leaf, with a thin clear strip down one side that lets light in while keeping water loss low, which is how the plant survives dry spells. Note that the pearls are toxic to people and pets if eaten, so hang it well out of reach of children and animals.
Bright, indirect light is best, with a little gentle direct sun being fine. Good light keeps the pearls plump and the stems full. Too little light leaves the strands sparse and leggy.
Water only when the soil has dried out, and far less in winter. The pearls store water, so the plant copes well with neglect but rots quickly if kept wet. When in doubt, leave it a few more days. Room humidity is fine.
Feed sparingly, with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once or twice through summer.
Use a free-draining cactus or succulent mix and a pot with good drainage. It likes a snug pot and shallow roots, so it rarely needs repotting.
