Ornamental sedges bring soft, flowing, grass-like texture to a garden without the maintenance of a lawn. Carex comans 'Phoenix Green' forms a low, dense mound of fine, bright green, hair-like leaves that cascade gently outward.
Carex 'Red Rooster' has warm, coppery-bronze foliage that adds rich colour. Both are evergreen, compact and well-behaved, staying where you put them without running or self-seeding aggressively. They handle coastal conditions, moderate wind and some salt exposure, and they work beautifully in containers, borders and among rocks.
30 to 40 cm tall and wide. Compact, mounding habit.
Moderate.
Container, border edging, rockery, alongside water features, textural contrast in a mixed planting.
Full sun to semi-shade. The foliage colour is best in sun, but they handle some shade.
Moist, well-drained soil with compost. They prefer slightly more moisture than most grasses.
Moderate. Water regularly, especially through summer. Not as drought-tolerant as indigenous grasses. They cope with dry spells but look better with consistent moisture.
A feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser supports good foliage colour.
Comb out dead leaves with your fingers or a rake. If the clump gets tatty, cut it back hard in late winter and it will flush with fresh growth.
