Sea Lavender (Limonium perezii) Care Guide

Exotic  |  Easy Care  |  Perennials and bulbs

Sea lavender is a tough, coastal perennial with large, leathery, dark green basal leaves and tall, branching stems carrying clouds of tiny, papery, purple and white flowers from spring through summer.

Good to know

The flowers dry on the plant and hold their colour for months, making them excellent for both fresh and dried flower arrangements. It is one of the most salt-tolerant ornamental perennials you can grow, naturally adapted to rocky coastlines and seafront positions, and it handles wind, drought, sandy soil and alkaline conditions easily. It is the kind of plant that looks after itself in the toughest spots and still manages to flower beautifully.

Size

40 to 60 cm tall in flower, about 40 cm wide.

Moderate.

Best uses

Coastal front-line planting, rockery, border, cut and dried flower, container. Excellent for the most exposed, salty positions.

Light / aspect

Full sun. It needs open, sunny conditions.

Soil

Any well-drained soil, including sandy, rocky, alkaline and poor conditions. It thrives in exactly the conditions we have here.

Water requirements

Very drought-tolerant once established. Water while settling in, then it needs very little.

Feeding

Minimal. It does not need rich conditions. A light feed in spring is more than enough.

Pruning

Remove spent flower stems at the base once they have finished or once you have harvested them for arrangements. Tidy old leaves as needed.
