Scabiosa (Scabiosa africana) Care Guide

Indigenous  |  Easy Care  |  Perennials and bulbs

The indigenous scabiosa is a soft, mounding perennial with grey-green leaves and dainty, pincushion-like flowers on long, slender stems that wave gently in the breeze.

Good to know

Scabiosa africana comes in blue, pink and white, and the hybrid Flutter Pure White is a particularly clean, free-flowering form. The flowers are produced over a very long season and are magnets for bees, butterflies and other pollinators. They have a light, airy, cottage-garden quality that softens formal beds and mixes beautifully with grasses and other perennials. They handle coastal conditions, wind and moderate drought.

Size

30 to 60 cm tall, about 40 cm wide.

Growth rate

Moderate to fast.

Best uses

Mixed border, cottage garden, pollinator garden, container, cut flower. The long, slender stems and airy flowers add movement and lightness to a planting.

Light / aspect

Full sun. Flowers best in open, sunny positions with good airflow.

Soil

Well-drained soil. Handles sandy coastal conditions. Does not enjoy heavy, waterlogged ground.

Water requirements

Moderate. Water while establishing. Reasonably drought-tolerant once settled, but flowers more freely with some regular moisture.

Feeding

A light feed in spring and midsummer supports continued flowering.

Pruning

Deadhead regularly to extend the flowering season. Cut the plant back in late winter to encourage fresh basal growth.
