Rubber Plant (Ficus elastica) Care Guide

The rubber plant is a proper statement piece. Thick, glossy, oval leaves grow on a sturdy upright stem, and as it matures it develops a bold, almost tree-like presence in a room. The classic form has deep green, almost black leaves, but the popular Tineke has cream and green variegation, Ruby adds pink and red tones, and Abidjan has rich, dark burgundy foliage. Care is the same for all of them.

Good to know

The leaves collect dust, and a dusty leaf cannot absorb light properly. Wipe them gently with a damp cloth every few weeks to keep them glossy and the plant healthy. The sap is a milky white latex that can irritate skin and stain fabric, so handle with care when pruning.

Light

Bright, indirect light. The variegated forms (Tineke, Ruby) need more light than the solid green and dark forms to hold their colour. All of them tolerate medium light, but growth slows. Avoid direct afternoon sun, which can burn the leaves.

Water & humidity

Water when the top few centimetres of soil have dried out. It prefers to dry slightly between waterings rather than stay constantly moist. Reduce watering in winter. Normal household humidity is fine, though it appreciates a leaf wipe with a damp cloth.

Feeding

Feed once a month through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser.

Repotting & soil

Repot every one to two years in spring when roots fill the pot. Use a well-draining potting mix. A heavy pot helps anchor it as it grows tall.
