Resin Bush (Euryops virgineus / pectinatus) Care Guide

Indigenous  |  Easy Care  |  Medium shrubs

The resin bush is one of the most reliable and cheerful flowering shrubs for a coastal garden. It covers itself in bright yellow daisy flowers over a long season, mainly through winter and spring, bringing colour when the garden needs it most.

Good to know

Euryops virgineus has fine, needle-like leaves and a compact, dense habit. Euryops pectinatus (the grey-leaved euryops) has broader, grey-green, deeply lobed leaves and larger flowers. Both are evergreen, fast-growing, and handle wind, salt, sandy soil and drought. They are absolute workhorses: tough, undemanding and always in flower when you need them.

Size

1 to 1.5 m, depending on variety.

Growth rate

Fast.

Best uses

Mass planting for winter and spring colour, mixed border, cottage garden, container, filler. Plant in groups for a bold yellow display.

Light / aspect

Full sun. They need sun for the best flowering.

Soil

Any well-drained soil, including poor, sandy and alkaline conditions. Not fussy.

Water requirements

Water-wise once established. Water while settling in.

Feeding

A light feed in autumn encourages heavier winter flowering. Not demanding.

Pruning

Trim lightly after flowering to keep the plant compact and prevent it becoming woody and sparse at the base. Do not cut back into bare wood, which does not resprout well. Regular light trimming is better than one hard prune.
