Pothos (Devil's Ivy) Care Guide

Pothos, also known as devil's ivy, is one of the toughest and most forgiving indoor plants you can own. Its trailing stems of heart-shaped, often variegated leaves look great spilling from a shelf or hanging basket, and it grows in almost any spot. If you are new to indoor plants, this is a wonderful place to start.

Good to know

Pothos grows long, trailing vines that you can let hang or train up a pole. To keep it full and bushy, pinch back the tips now and then, and pop the cuttings in water, where they root easily for new plants. Note that the leaves are toxic if chewed, so keep it away from small children and pets.

Light

Pothos handles a wide range of light, from medium to bright indirect. Brighter light keeps the variegation strong, while in low light the leaves turn greener. Keep it out of direct sun.

Water & humidity

Let the top few centimetres of soil dry out between waterings. It is very forgiving and would rather be a touch dry than wet. Normal room humidity is fine.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every few weeks through the growing season. It is not a heavy feeder.

Repotting & soil

Use a standard free-draining potting mix. Repot every year or two when the roots fill the pot, or simply take cuttings to start fresh plants.
