The ponytail palm is not a palm at all, it is a succulent, and that thick, swollen base is its water tank. It stores moisture in that bulbous trunk, which is why it is one of the most drought-tolerant indoor plants you can find. The long, curling leaves cascade from the top like a fountain, giving it the ponytail look. It is slow-growing, long-lived and about as low-maintenance as an indoor plant gets.
That fat base is not a sign of overwatering. It is the plant's natural water reservoir and should always be round and firm. If it goes soft or wrinkly, the plant has been sitting in wet soil for too long.
Bright light, including some direct sun. It genuinely enjoys a sunny windowsill, which most houseplants do not. It tolerates medium light but grows even more slowly.
Water sparingly. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings, then give it a good soak and let it drain. In winter, water even less, once a month may be enough. Overwatering is the only real threat. Normal household humidity is fine; it does not need misting.
Feed two to three times a year through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. It does not need much.
Very slow grower, so repotting every three to four years is usually enough. Use a very well-draining, gritty mix. A cactus and succulent mix works well. Choose a pot that is only slightly larger than the base, and make sure it has drainage holes.
