The pink mallow is a fast-growing, free-flowering indigenous shrub that produces pink, hibiscus-like flowers almost continuously through the warmer months. It belongs to the mallow family (related to hibiscus) and has rough-textured, lobed, dark green leaves on slender, upright stems.
It is a generous, no-fuss plant that fills a gap in a border quickly and keeps on flowering with very little encouragement. It handles wind, coastal exposure and moderate drought, grows in poor sandy soil, and attracts bees, butterflies and other pollinators. Its lightweight structure makes it a good companion in a mixed planting rather than a standalone feature.
1 to 1.5 m tall, about 1 m wide.
Fast.
Mixed border, cottage garden, filler, wildflower-style planting, container. Useful for quick colour while slower plants establish.
Full sun. Flowers best in open, sunny conditions.
Any well-drained soil, including sandy and poor coastal conditions. Not fussy.
Moderate. Water while establishing, then it copes with dry spells. It flowers more generously with occasional watering through summer.
A light feed in spring keeps it flowering freely. Not demanding.
Cut back by about a third in late winter to encourage dense, bushy new growth. Without pruning it can become leggy and sparse. Deadhead spent flowers to extend the display.
