Philodendron Care Guide

Philodendrons are among the most rewarding and forgiving indoor plants you can grow. They come in climbing and bushy forms, with glossy leaves that range from simple hearts to the deeply lobed, split leaves of this Xanadu type. They grow happily indoors all year and ask very little in return.

Good to know

Philodendrons are quick to tell you what they need, with leaves that lean towards the light and droop a little when thirsty. The bushy, self-heading types like this one stay neat and full without needing a stake. Note that the leaves are toxic if chewed, so keep it away from small children and pets.

Light

Medium to bright, indirect light is ideal. They tolerate lower light better than many plants, but growth is fuller and leaves larger in a brighter spot. Keep them out of harsh direct sun.

Water & humidity

Let the top few centimetres of soil dry out before watering. They like a good drink and then a chance to drain, and dislike sitting wet. They enjoy the humidity of our coastal air and grow strongest in the warmer months.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every few weeks through spring and summer.

Repotting & soil

Use a rich, free-draining mix. Repot every year or two as the plant fills out, moving up one pot size at a time.
