Peperomia (Watermelon) Care Guide

Peperomias are compact, easy-care plants with thick, often patterned leaves. This Watermelon variety is a favourite, named for the silver and green stripes on its rounded leaves that look just like a watermelon skin. They stay small and tidy, which makes them perfect for a shelf, desk or windowsill.

Good to know

The slightly succulent leaves store water, so peperomias are more forgiving of a missed watering than most leafy plants. If anything, they are far happier a little dry than too wet. They are also non-toxic, so they are safe around pets and children.

Light

Medium to bright, indirect light keeps the leaf markings strong. Too little light fades the pattern and makes the plant leggy. Keep it out of direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Water & humidity

Let the top half of the soil dry out before watering, and err on the dry side. The thick leaves mean it copes well with normal room humidity, so there is no need to fuss over it.

Feeding

Feed lightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength once a month or so through spring and summer.

Repotting & soil

Use a light, free-draining mix, ideally one made for indoor plants. Peperomias have small root systems and like a snug pot, so repot only when really needed.
