Pelargonium Care Guide

Indigenous  |  Easy Care  |  Perennials and bulbs

South African pelargoniums (not to be confused with the common "geranium" bedding plants, which are actually pelargonium hybrids) are a diverse group of tough, aromatic, sun-loving perennials and shrublets.

Good to know

Pelargonium incanum has soft, silver, felted leaves and pale pink flowers. Pelargonium Malva is a spreading form with mauve flowers. Pelargonium Regal Knight and Tacari are larger-flowered regal types with showy pink and purple blooms. All are adapted to the dry, sunny, well-drained conditions of this coast. The leaves of many species are aromatic, releasing scents ranging from rose and lemon to mint and spice when touched.

Size

30 cm to 1 m depending on species and variety.

Growth rate

Moderate to fast.

Best uses

Border, rockery, container, cottage garden, scented garden, window box. The regal types are showier; the species types are tougher and more water-wise.

Light / aspect

Full sun. They need sun for compact growth and free flowering.

Soil

Well-drained soil. They handle sandy, alkaline coastal conditions and poor soil. They do not enjoy heavy, waterlogged ground.

Water requirements

Low to moderate. The species types (incanum, Malva) are very drought-tolerant. The regal types need a little more regular watering for the best flowering. All cope with dry spells.

Feeding

A feed every few weeks through the flowering season improves the display, especially for the regal types.

Pruning

Deadhead spent flowers. Pinch growing tips on young plants to encourage bushy growth. Cut back leggy plants by about a third in late winter to refresh them.
