Peanut Cactus (Echinopsis chamaecereus) Care Guide

Exotic (South American)  |  Easy Care  |  Succulents

The peanut cactus is a small, clustering cactus with short, finger-like, peanut-shaped stems that spread into a dense mat. In spring, it produces disproportionately large, bright orange-red flowers that are surprisingly showy for such a small plant.

Good to know

It is compact enough for a windowsill, a small pot or a rockery pocket, and it is one of the easiest cacti to grow. It handles the coastal conditions here well, as long as it has good drainage and is not overwatered.

Size

10 to 15 cm tall, spreading to 30 cm or more as it clusters.

Growth rate

Moderate. It offsets freely and fills a pot over a couple of seasons.

Best uses

Container, windowsill, rockery pocket, succulent bowl. A charming small-space plant.

Light / aspect

Full sun. It needs strong light to flower well.

Soil

Very well-drained, gritty soil. A cactus mix is ideal.

Water requirements

Low. Water sparingly through the growing season, letting the soil dry out between drinks. In winter, keep it almost completely dry for a cool, dry rest period, which encourages flowering in spring.

Feeding

A very light feed once or twice in the growing season with a cactus fertiliser.

Pruning

None needed. Remove any dead or damaged stems.
