Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) Care Guide

The peace lily is a graceful indoor plant with glossy dark leaves and elegant white flowers that appear on and off through the year. It is one of the best plants for shadier spots, and it has a useful habit of drooping when thirsty, then perking back up after a drink, which takes the guesswork out of watering.

Good to know

The white flower is not a true flower at all but a spathe, a modified leaf that wraps around the flower spike in the centre. As blooms age they turn green, which is normal, and you can snip the old stems off at the base. Note that the leaves are toxic if chewed, so place it out of reach of small children and pets.

Light

Medium to low, indirect light suits it well, which is why it does so well indoors and in shadier rooms. It will flower more in brighter light, but keep it out of direct sun.

Water & humidity

Keep the soil lightly moist and water when the leaves start to droop, then watch it recover. It is sensitive to chlorine in tap water, so standing water overnight or using rainwater helps. It loves humidity.

Feeding

Feed with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength every few weeks through spring and summer to encourage flowering.

Repotting & soil

Use a free-draining potting mix. Repot in spring when the roots fill the pot. A slightly snug pot encourages more flowers.
