Indigenous (endemic to Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal) | Easy Care | Small tree / large shrub
The pambati tree is a hidden gem of the Eastern Cape coast and one of the best small screening trees for this area. It is a fast-growing, dense, evergreen shrub or small tree with glossy, dark green leaves and clusters of fragrant, custard-yellow, bell-shaped flowers from late summer to autumn.
It is naturally found growing in coastal forest margins and on sandstone outcrops in the Eastern Cape and KwaZulu-Natal, so it is right at home in our conditions. It has a compact, non-invasive root system, which makes it ideal for small gardens, townhouses and planting near paving or structures. It responds beautifully to pruning and can be shaped into a hedge, a screen, or a neat single-stemmed tree. It handles full sun, semi-shade, wet and dry conditions, and is hardy to around minus 4 degrees once established.
3 to 5 m in a garden, easily kept smaller with pruning. Can reach 10 m in its natural forest habitat.
Medium to fast.
Screen, hedge, small garden tree, container plant, coastal garden feature. Excellent for narrow spaces and small properties.
Full sun to semi-shade. Grows well in both.
Prefers well-drained, nutrient-rich loam, but adapts to sandy coastal conditions with compost added.
Performs best with regular water through the year, but tolerates periods of drought once established. Not as water-wise as some indigenous trees, but manageable.
Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser for the best growth and flowering.
Responds very well to pruning and can be clipped into a formal hedge or shaped into a small tree. Prune in late winter or early spring before the new growth flush.
