NZ Flax (Phormium cookianum) Care Guide

Exotic (New Zealand)  |  Easy Care  |  Grasses and strappy plants

New Zealand flax brings bold, structural, sword-shaped foliage to a garden, and the 'Flamingo' cultivar adds colour with its leaves striped in shades of pink, cream and green.

Good to know

It forms a dramatic, upright clump of long, arching, leathery leaves that adds architectural presence to a border, a container or a driveway entrance. It is naturally coastal, growing on the New Zealand shoreline, so it handles wind, salt air and exposed positions well. It also copes with drought once established, though it looks best with moderate moisture. It is a bold plant that makes a statement.

Size

1 to 1.5 m tall and about the same wide for the Flamingo cultivar. The species can reach 2 m.

Growth rate

Moderate.

Best uses

Architectural accent, container, border feature, entrance planting, coastal garden structure. Works well with grasses, aloes and succulents for a bold, modern look.

Light / aspect

Full sun for the best foliage colour. Tolerates semi-shade.

Soil

Any well-drained soil. Handles sandy coastal conditions. Add compost at planting for the best results.

Water requirements

Moderate. Water while establishing. Reasonably drought-tolerant once settled, but it looks better with some moisture through summer.

Feeding

A feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser supports good leaf colour.

Pruning

Remove dead or damaged leaves by pulling or cutting them at the base. Do not cut the whole plant back unless it has become very tatty, in which case a hard prune in late winter allows it to regrow.
