The money tree is often sold with its trunk braided into a decorative twist, which gives it an instantly striking look. Beyond the braided stem, it is a handsome foliage plant with large, glossy, hand-shaped leaves that fan out from each branch. It is surprisingly unfussy for something that looks so polished.
The braided trunk is a nursery styling trick done when the stems are young and flexible. It will not continue braiding on its own, but the existing braid holds its shape as the plant grows.
Bright, indirect light. It adapts to medium light but grows more slowly. Avoid direct sun, which can scorch the leaves. Rotate the pot occasionally so it grows evenly.
Water thoroughly when the top few centimetres of soil are dry, then let it drain completely. It stores water in its thick trunk, so it copes with a missed watering better than most plants. Overwatering is the main risk. Normal indoor humidity is fine.
Feed once a month through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength.
Repot every two years or when roots fill the pot. Use a well-draining mix, and choose a pot with good drainage holes. It does not like wet feet.
