The mirror plant gets its name from its incredibly glossy, almost reflective leaves. The cultivars you will find at the nursery (Pacific Sunrise, Pacific Night, Pink Splendour, Marble Chips) add variegation in shades of gold, copper, pink, cream and deep purple to that mirror-like shine, making them some of the most colourful foliage plants available for coastal gardens.
They are dense, compact, evergreen shrubs that handle coastal wind, salt spray and exposed positions well. Originally from New Zealand's coastline, they are naturally adapted to the kind of conditions we have here: wind, salt and sandy soil.
1 to 2 m, depending on variety. Easily kept smaller with pruning.
Moderate.
Colour accent, mixed border, hedge, container, coastal feature. The variegated forms add year-round foliage colour.
Full sun for the most intense leaf colour. Tolerates semi-shade but the variegation can fade.
Any well-drained soil, including sandy coastal conditions. Not fussy.
Moderate. Water while establishing. Reasonably drought-tolerant once settled.
A feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser keeps the foliage colour vibrant.
Clip to shape as needed. They maintain a naturally dense form and do not need much pruning. A light trim in spring keeps them tidy.
