Mexican fleabane is the small, spreading daisy that tumbles out of walls, cracks, rockeries and the edges of steps to soften hard landscaping with a cloud of tiny flowers.
The flowers open white, age to pink and then deepen to rose, so the plant carries all three colours at once, giving it a confetti-like effect. It self-seeds freely into cracks, joints and any open ground, and once established it pops up in the most unexpected places, which is part of its charm. It is one of the best plants for softening paving, walls and edges in a natural, relaxed way. It handles drought, poor soil and coastal conditions.
15 to 30 cm tall, spreading to 50 cm or more.
Fast. Self-seeds enthusiastically.
Wall crevices, paving joints, rockery, pathway edges, container spillover, cottage garden. The best plant for softening hard landscaping.
Full sun to semi-shade. It flowers in both.
Any well-drained soil, including poor, sandy, rocky and alkaline conditions. It thrives in the lean conditions found in wall crevices and paving joints.
Very low once established. It survives on rainfall and whatever moisture it finds.
None needed. Rich soil makes it lush and soft at the expense of its compact, floriferous character.
Cut it back hard in late winter if it gets tatty. It regrows quickly. Otherwise, just let it do its thing.
