Leopard Plant (Farfugium japonicum) Care Guide

The leopard plant is an unusual and striking choice for indoors. Its large, round, glossy leaves look like oversized lily pads, and some forms are spotted with bright yellow dots, giving it the leopard name. It is naturally a shade-loving plant from moist forest floors in East Asia, and it brings a lush, almost subtropical feel to a cool, shaded indoor spot.

Good to know

It prefers cool conditions and can struggle in warm, dry rooms. If your home tends to run warm with heaters in winter, this may not be the plant for you unless you have a cool bathroom or a sheltered porch. It may produce small yellow daisy-like flowers on tall stems in autumn or winter, which is a bonus when it happens.

Light

Low to medium, indirect light. Bright light and direct sun will scorch and fade those beautiful leaves. A cool, north-facing spot or a shaded bathroom is ideal.

Water & humidity

Keep the soil consistently moist. It does not tolerate drying out at all, and it needs cool, humid air. Mist regularly and keep it away from heaters and warm draughts. If the leaf edges brown, the air is too dry.

Feeding

Feed monthly through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength.

Repotting & soil

Repot in spring when the clump outgrows its pot. Use a rich, moisture-retaining mix with good organic content.
