Kangaroo Fern Care Guide

The Kangaroo fern is a hardy, good-looking fern with glossy, leathery fronds that are tougher than they look. The fronds vary in shape, some smooth-edged and some lobed, a little like a kangaroo's paw, which gives the plant its name. It is one of the easier ferns to keep happy indoors.

Good to know

Unlike many ferns, the Kangaroo fern grows from a creeping, furry rhizome that runs along the surface of the soil. Leave it sitting on top, do not bury it, as that is how the plant spreads. It is non-toxic, so it is safe around pets and children.

Light

Medium, indirect light suits it well. It is happy in a shadier spot than most plants, but keep it out of direct sun, which burns the fronds.

Water & humidity

Keep the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. The thicker fronds make it more forgiving of the odd missed watering than a delicate fern. It enjoys humidity, so the coastal air helps, though a winter heater dries things out.

Feeding

Feed sparingly with a weak, balanced liquid fertiliser once a month or so through the growing season.

Repotting & soil

Use a light, free-draining mix with plenty of organic matter. Repot only when the rhizomes have covered the surface and the pot is full, keeping the rhizome on top of the soil.
