Kalanchoe (Kalanchoe fedtschenkoi) Care Guide

Exotic (Madagascar)  |  Easy Care  |  Succulents

This particular kalanchoe is a low, spreading succulent with thick, rounded, scalloped, blue-grey to lavender leaves that develop pink to reddish edges in strong sun and cool weather.

Good to know

The leaf colour alone makes it a beautiful groundcover or container plant. It produces small, tubular, coral to pinkish-orange flowers on upright stems. It is one of the easiest succulents to grow, handling drought, heat, sandy soil and some coastal exposure. It spreads by dropping small plantlets from its leaf margins, which root wherever they land, so it fills in quickly and can become a reliable groundcover.

Size

20 to 40 cm tall, spreading.

Growth rate

Moderate to fast. Spreads readily from plantlets.

Best uses

Groundcover, rockery, edging, container, hanging basket, succulent garden. Good for filling dry, sunny spots.

Light / aspect

Full sun for the best leaf colour. Tolerates semi-shade but the colour fades to plain green.

Soil

Any well-drained soil. Not fussy.

Water requirements

Low. Drought-tolerant. Water while settling in, then it largely looks after itself.

Feeding

Minimal. A light feed once a year is enough.

Pruning

Trim to control spread. Remove spent flower stems.
