Delospermas are low, spreading, succulent groundcovers that produce masses of brightly coloured, daisy-like flowers, often so thickly that the foliage disappears under a sheet of colour.
Delosperma cooperi has vivid magenta-pink flowers. Delosperma echinatum (pickle plant) has small, hairy, gherkin-shaped leaves and yellow flowers. Delosperma lydenburgense has soft pink flowers. All are South African natives, tough, drought-hardy and ideal for hot, sunny, well-drained positions. They are among the most floriferous groundcovers you can plant, and in flower they are genuinely dazzling.
5 to 15 cm tall, spreading to 50 cm or more per plant.
Fast.
Rockery, bank cover, edging, between pavers, container spillover, dry sunny beds. Mass plant for a carpet of colour.
Full sun. They need hot, open conditions for the best flowering.
Very well-drained, sandy or gritty soil. They rot in heavy, wet ground. The poor, sandy coastal conditions here suit them perfectly.
Very drought-tolerant. Water while settling in, then they need almost nothing.
None needed. Rich soil actually reduces flowering.
Trim after flowering to keep them tidy and encourage a second flush. Divide congested clumps every few years.
