Hosta White Feather is an unusual choice for indoors, and that is part of its appeal. Its young leaves emerge almost pure white, then gradually take on green veining and colour as they mature, creating a striking two-tone effect. Hostas are traditionally outdoor shade plants, and growing one successfully indoors requires recreating those conditions as closely as possible: cool, shaded, humid and consistent.
This is not a plant that will thrive on a sunny windowsill in a warm room. It needs cool conditions, especially in winter, and it may go dormant, dying back to the roots and resprouting in spring. That dormancy is natural and essential for its long-term health. Think of it as a seasonal plant indoors rather than an evergreen one.
Low to medium, indirect light. It naturally grows in woodland shade, so a cool, north-facing room or a spot away from direct sun suits it best. Bright light bleaches the white leaves and burns the edges.
Keep the soil consistently moist but not waterlogged. Hostas hate drying out, and their large, thin leaves wilt and brown quickly in dry conditions. They need cool, humid air. Mist regularly and keep them well away from heaters. A cool bathroom or a sheltered indoor spot works best.
Feed monthly through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength while the plant is in active growth. Stop feeding when it goes dormant.
Repot in spring if the crown has filled the pot. Use a rich, moisture-retaining mix with plenty of organic matter.
