Honey Flower (Freylinia tropica) Care Guide

Indigenous  |  Easy Care  |  Medium shrubs

The honey flower is a neat, versatile, evergreen shrub with narrow, bright green leaves and clusters of small, tubular flowers in blue or white that appear over a long season from spring into autumn.

Good to know

The common name comes from the sweet, honey-like scent the flowers produce, which carries on a still day and draws bees, butterflies and other pollinators. It is a well-behaved, compact shrub that works equally well as a low hedge, a border plant or a feature in a container. It handles coastal conditions, wind and moderate drought once established, and it has a tidy, dense habit that needs only light maintenance.

Size

1 to 2 m tall and about 1 m wide.

Growth rate

Moderate.

Best uses

Low hedge, mixed border, scented garden, container, wildlife garden. Valuable for its long flowering season and fragrance.

Light / aspect

Full sun to semi-shade. Flowers best in sun.

Soil

Well-drained soil with some compost. Handles sandy coastal conditions.

Water requirements

Moderate. Water regularly while establishing, then it handles dry spells. Not as drought-hardy as the toughest indigenous shrubs but manageable.

Feeding

A feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser supports a longer flowering season.

Pruning

Light pruning after the main flowering flush keeps it tidy and encourages another round of flowers. It maintains a naturally neat shape and rarely needs hard pruning.
