Plant Care Guides / Indoor / Moderate Care
The homalomena is an underrated gem. Its thick, heart-shaped leaves have a subtle camouflage-like pattern of dark and light green, and the whole plant has a lush, tropical feel without being demanding. It stays compact and bushy, rarely getting leggy, which makes it a reliable, good-looking plant for a table, desk or low shelf.
Homalomenas are related to philodendrons and share their easy-going nature, though they are a little fussier about humidity. The leaves have a mild, pleasant scent when rubbed. It is a slow to moderate grower, so do not expect rapid changes.
Medium to bright, indirect light. It does surprisingly well in lower light compared to many tropical plants, though growth slows. Avoid direct sun, which fades and scorches the patterned leaves.
Keep the soil consistently moist but never waterlogged. It does not like drying out completely, which sets it apart from tougher aroids like the pothos or ZZ plant. Check it every few days and water when the top centimetre feels dry. It appreciates humidity, so mist regularly or group it with other plants. In winter, reduce watering slightly but do not let it dry right out.
Feed monthly through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength.
Repot every one to two years in spring. Use a rich, well-draining mix that holds some moisture, standard potting soil with perlite and a little peat or coco coir.
