Heartleaf Philodendron (Philodendron hederaceum) Care Guide

The heartleaf philodendron is the classic trailing houseplant. Its glossy, heart-shaped leaves tumble from a shelf, hang from a basket or climb a moss pole, and it grows so willingly that even total beginners find it hard to fail with. This covers the green Scandens form and the velvety Micans variety, both need the same care.

Good to know

It roots incredibly easily. Snip a stem below a node, put it in a glass of water, and you will have roots within a couple of weeks. One plant becomes many in no time.

Light

Medium to bright, indirect light. It genuinely tolerates low light better than most plants, which is why it thrives in bathrooms and hallways. Growth just slows down. Avoid direct sun, which yellows the leaves.

Water & humidity

Water when the top couple of centimetres dry out. It is forgiving of the odd missed watering but does not enjoy sitting in soggy soil. Normal household humidity is fine, though it responds well to an occasional mist.

Feeding

Feed once a month through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Skip winter.

Repotting & soil

Repot when roots start circling the pot or growing through the drainage holes. A standard well-draining potting mix is all it needs. It is happy being slightly root-bound.
