Golden Dewdrop (Duranta erecta) Care Guide

Exotic  |  Easy Care  |  Medium shrubs

The golden dewdrop is a fast-growing, arching, evergreen shrub with bright green leaves, drooping clusters of small lilac-blue flowers through spring and summer, and decorative golden-orange berries that hang in long strands through autumn and winter, giving the plant its common name.

Good to know

The combination of blue flowers and gold berries makes it one of the more ornamental exotic shrubs available. It handles coastal conditions, wind and some salt exposure, and it grows fast enough to provide screening within a season or two. A note of caution: the berries are mildly toxic to people and pets if eaten, so position it where children and animals will not be tempted.

Size

1.5 to 3 m, depending on how it is managed. Can be kept smaller as a hedge.

Growth rate

Fast.

Best uses

Screen, informal hedge, feature shrub, mixed border. The berries add winter interest.

Light / aspect

Full sun for the best flowering and fruiting. Tolerates semi-shade.

Soil

Any well-drained soil. Handles sandy coastal conditions with compost worked in.

Water requirements

Moderate. Water regularly while establishing. Reasonably drought-tolerant once settled, though it performs better with some summer moisture.

Feeding

Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser.

Pruning

Prune in late winter or early spring to shape. It responds well to pruning and can be trimmed as a hedge. Remove any dead or crossing branches.
