Indigenous | Easy Care | Groundcovers
Gazanias are the cheerful, sun-loving daisy groundcovers that open their big, bold flowers in bright sunshine and close them again on cloudy days and at night. They come in a wide range of colours: yellow, orange, pink, cream, white and bicolours with dramatic dark centres.
The trailing species (Gazania rigens and leucolaena) spread to form dense mats that are excellent for bank cover and mass planting. The clumping types (like New Day Pink Shades and New Day White) stay more compact and suit beds and borders. All are indigenous, water-wise and completely at home in the hot, dry, sandy, windy conditions of this coast. They flower heavily from late winter through summer.
15 to 25 cm tall. Trailing types spread to 50 cm or more per plant.
Fast. They fill in quickly and flower within weeks of planting.
Bank cover, mass planting, edging, border, container, rockery. Use trailing types for slopes and spreading cover; clumping types for beds and borders.
Full sun. The flowers only open in direct sunlight.
Any well-drained soil, including sandy, poor and alkaline conditions. They thrive in the exact conditions we have here.
Very drought-tolerant. Water while settling in, then they need very little.
A light feed in spring encourages heavier flowering, but they perform well without it.
Deadhead spent flowers to extend the display. Cut back tired plants in late summer to encourage a fresh flush of growth and flowers in autumn.
