Echeveria Care Guide

Exotic (Mexican)  |  Easy Care  |  Succulents

Echeverias are the rosette-forming succulents beloved for their near-perfect symmetry and soft, pastel colours. The leaves are thick, fleshy and arranged in a tight rose shape, in shades of green, grey, blue, pink, purple and coral depending on variety.

Good to know

This covers Miranda, Ponto Rosa (Pink Spike), Santa Fe, Runyonii 'Topsy Turvy' and others. They are compact enough for containers, rockeries, windowsills and succulent bowls, and they produce dainty, bell-shaped flowers on arching stems. They handle the dry, sunny conditions of a St Francis Bay garden well, though they are not as tough in wind and salt as the indigenous succulents. They do best in a sheltered, sunny spot or in containers.

Size

10 to 30 cm diameter, depending on variety. Compact.

Growth rate

Slow to moderate.

Best uses

Container, succulent bowl, rockery, edging, windowsill, tabletop display. Perfect for small spaces.

Light / aspect

Full sun to bright, indirect light. They colour up best in sun. Hot, direct afternoon sun in midsummer can scorch them.

Soil

Very well-drained, gritty soil. A cactus and succulent mix is ideal.

Water requirements

Low. Let the soil dry out completely between waterings. Water the soil, not the rosette, because water sitting in the centre causes rot. In winter, water very sparingly.

Feeding

A light feed once or twice a year with a dilute balanced fertiliser in the growing season.

Pruning

Remove dead lower leaves and spent flower stems. That is all.
