Dracaena Care Guide

Dracaenas are tough, upright foliage plants grown for their long, strappy leaves, often striped in greens, yellows or reds depending on the variety. They are some of the most forgiving indoor plants around, happy to be left alone, which makes them a good choice for beginners and busy households.

Good to know

There are many kinds of Dracaena, from the slim 'Lemon Lime' to the tree-like types, and they all share the same easy care, growing slowly on a central stem and shedding their lowest leaves as they gain height. Note that the leaves are toxic to cats and dogs if chewed, so keep it out of reach of curious pets.

Light

Medium to bright, indirect light is ideal, though most Dracaenas cope with lower light too. The brighter the spot, the stronger the leaf colour. Keep them out of direct sun, which can scorch the leaves.

Water & humidity

Let the top half of the soil dry out before watering. Dracaenas are sensitive to fluoride and salts in tap water, which can brown the leaf tips, so water with rainwater or let tap water stand overnight if you can. They are not fussy about humidity.

Feeding

Feed lightly with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength a few times through spring and summer. They are slow growers and do not need much.

Repotting & soil

Use a free-draining potting mix. Dracaenas like being snug, so only repot every couple of years when clearly pot-bound.
