Cryptobergia 'Bronze' is an unusual hybrid between a cryptanthus (earth star) and a billbergia (a bromeliad relative). It forms a low, spreading rosette of stiff, strap-shaped leaves in rich bronze to copper tones, making it a striking colour accent in a succulent garden, a container display or a shaded rockery.
Unlike most succulents, it tolerates more shade than sun, which makes it useful for spots where other succulents would stretch and fade. It is tough, low-maintenance and handles the coastal conditions here well.
15 to 30 cm tall, spreading slowly to form a clump.
Slow to moderate.
Container, rockery, groundcover in a sheltered spot, shade garden accent. Useful for adding bronze foliage colour in semi-shade.
Semi-shade to bright, indirect light. It handles more shade than most succulents. Avoid hot, direct afternoon sun, which can scorch the leaves.
Well-drained soil with some organic matter. A standard potting mix with added perlite works. It is not as fussy about gritty, lean soil as most succulents.
Moderate. Water when the top of the soil dries out. It needs more moisture than most succulents but still does not enjoy waterlogged conditions.
A light feed in spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser at half strength.
Remove dead outer leaves to keep the rosette tidy. Divide clumps when they become congested.
