Coastal Rosemary (Westringia fruticosa) Care Guide

Exotic (Australian)  |  Easy Care  |  Medium shrubs

Do not let the name fool you: coastal rosemary is not a rosemary at all, it is an Australian native that gets its common name from its similar-looking grey-green, narrow leaves.

Good to know

It is one of the best hedging and screening shrubs for exposed coastal positions. It forms a dense, rounded, evergreen bush that clips into a tight formal hedge, and it handles wind, salt air, sandy soil and drought better than almost any exotic shrub you can plant here. Small white or pale blue flowers appear through most of the year, attracting bees. It is the kind of plant that looks good every day without asking for anything.

Size

1 to 2 m tall and wide. Easily clipped to any size.

Growth rate

Moderate.

Best uses

Hedge, screen, topiary, border, container, exposed coastal planting. One of the best formal hedging plants for windy, salty positions.

Light / aspect

Full sun. Tolerates light shade but is densest and neatest in full sun.

Soil

Any well-drained soil, including sandy, alkaline and poor coastal conditions. Very unfussy.

Water requirements

Drought-tolerant once established. Water while settling in, then it needs very little.

Feeding

Minimal. A light feed in spring with a low-phosphorus fertiliser is enough. Avoid heavy feeding.

Pruning

Clips beautifully into formal shapes and hedges. Prune two to three times a year to maintain a tight form. Also looks good left as a natural, rounded bush with minimal trimming.
