Confetti Bush (Coleonema album / pulchellum) Care Guide

Indigenous  |  Easy Care  |  Medium shrubs

The confetti bush is one of the best-performing evergreen shrubs for coastal gardens. It forms a neat, upright, finely branched bush with soft, needle-like leaves that carry a strong citrus scent when brushed, a family trait it shares with the buchus.

Good to know

Coleonema album has white flowers and pulchellum has pink flowers, but both cover themselves in a blizzard of tiny blooms from May right through to November, giving the plant its confetti name. It is a fynbos plant through and through: naturally adapted to poor, well-drained, sandy soil, wind, salt air and drought once established. It makes an excellent hedge, screen or filler and needs very little attention once settled.

Size

About 1.2 m high and wide. Easily kept smaller with pruning.

Growth rate

Moderate.

Best uses

Hedge, screen, shrubbery, container, fynbos border. Excellent in exposed, windy positions where fussier shrubs would struggle.

Light / aspect

Full sun to light shade. Flowers best in sun.

Soil

Well-drained, sandy, acidic to neutral soil. It grows in the sandy coastal conditions here without special treatment. Avoid heavy, waterlogged soil.

Water requirements

Low to moderate. Drought-hardy once established. Water while settling in.

Feeding

Minimal. It thrives in poor soil and does not need rich feeding. If you feed, use a low-phosphorus fertiliser.

Pruning

A light trim after flowering keeps it compact and tidy. It does not need hard pruning and rarely needs much attention.
