Canary Island Date Palm (Phoenix canariensis) Care Guide

Exotic (Canary Islands)  |  Easy Care  |  Palm tree

The Canary Island date palm is the big, bold, classic palm you see lining seafront promenades and resort entrances. It has a thick, sturdy trunk topped with a massive, arching crown of dark green, feathery fronds, and it makes a statement like no other tree can.

Good to know

It is a slow grower, extremely long-lived, and once established it handles wind, salt air, drought and poor soil with almost no fuss. It is not a tree for small gardens; it eventually becomes very large and heavy, and the trunk can reach 10 to 15 m. But for a feature palm in a larger garden, on a boundary or flanking a driveway, it is magnificent.

Size

10 to 15 m tall with a very wide crown spread. Trunk diameter up to 1 m.

Growth rate

Slow.

Best uses

Feature palm, avenue planting, large garden specimen, driveway entrance. Not for small gardens.

Light / aspect

Full sun.

Soil

Adapts to most soils including sandy and alkaline coastal sand. Tolerates poor soil.

Water requirements

Drought-tolerant once established. Water young palms regularly until well rooted.

Feeding

Feed annually in spring with a balanced palm fertiliser.

Pruning

Remove dead fronds only. Do not prune the crown or remove green fronds, which weakens the palm. Be careful of the sharp spines at the base of each frond.
