Bush Violet (Barleria obtusa / repens) Care Guide

Indigenous  |  Easy Care  |  Medium shrubs

The bush violet is one of the most useful and floriferous small indigenous shrubs for autumn colour. From about March to June, it covers itself in sprays of soft mauve-blue tubular flowers at a time when most of the garden has wound down for winter.

Good to know

It forms a rounded, somewhat untidy shrub with dark green leaves, and it has a relaxed, natural look that suits informal and wild-style gardens. It is a vigorous self-seeder, popping up all over the garden once it is happy, and the strong root system means it is best repositioned when the seedlings are still small. It handles coastal conditions, moderate drought and partial shade, and it is a valuable plant for filling gaps in mixed borders and under trees. The nectar attracts butterflies.

Size

About 1 m tall and wide. Can spread further through self-seeding.

Growth rate

Fast.

Best uses

Mixed border, groundcover under light shade, informal filler, autumn colour display, wildlife garden. Plant in groups for the best effect.

Light / aspect

Sun to semi-shade. It flowers in both, though the display is heavier in more light.

Soil

Not fussy. Grows in most soils including sandy coastal conditions. Added compost helps but is not essential.

Water requirements

Moderate. Water while establishing, then it is fairly drought-tolerant. It appreciates some water through its flowering season for the best display.

Feeding

A light feed in late summer encourages heavier flowering. Not demanding.

Pruning

Prune hard after flowering to prevent it becoming too woody and to keep a compact shape. It resprouts readily.
