The blue marguerite is a compact, free-flowering indigenous perennial that produces cheerful blue daisy flowers with bright yellow centres over a very long season, from spring right through to late autumn in a mild coastal garden.
Felicia amelloides is the bushy, shrubby form with grey-green leaves, available in blue, periwinkle and white. Felicia bergeriana (the kingfisher daisy) is a smaller, more compact annual form. Both are bright, easy and invaluable for continuous colour in borders, beds and containers. They handle wind, coastal conditions and moderate drought, and they attract bees and butterflies.
30 to 60 cm tall and wide for amelloides. Bergeriana stays under 20 cm.
Fast. They flower quickly from planting and fill in within a season.
Border edging, mass planting, container, cottage garden, rockery, colour filler. Valuable for its very long flowering season.
Full sun. The flowers close in shade and on overcast days.
Any well-drained soil, including sandy and alkaline coastal conditions. Not fussy.
Moderate. Water while establishing, then it copes with dry spells. It flowers better with some regular moisture through summer.
A light feed every few weeks through the growing season extends the flowering display.
Deadhead regularly to keep the flowers coming. Cut the plant back by about a third in late summer if it gets leggy, and it will flush with new growth and flowers for autumn.
