Blue chalk sticks is a low, spreading succulent with finger-like, blue-grey leaves that look as if they have been dipped in chalk dust. It is one of the most striking groundcover succulents available, forming a dense, blue carpet that contrasts beautifully with green foliage, dark mulch and rocky surfaces.
It is completely at home in the sandy, dry, coastal conditions of St Francis Bay and handles wind, salt air, poor soil and drought without complaint. Plant it en masse on a bank, in a rockery, between pavers, or as edging along a bed, and it fills in quickly to create a seamless blue-grey mat.
15 to 30 cm tall, spreading to 60 cm or more.
Fast for a succulent. It fills in relatively quickly.
Groundcover, edging, rockery, bank or slope cover, between pavers, container. Mass planting for the best effect.
Full sun. The blue colour is most intense in sun; it fades to green in shade.
Any well-drained soil, including poor, sandy and rocky conditions. It does not need rich soil.
Very drought-tolerant. Water while settling in, then it needs almost nothing. Overwatering causes it to rot.
None needed. It grows happily in poor soil.
Trim or thin out if it becomes too thick or straggly. Cuttings root easily, so prunings can be replanted to fill gaps elsewhere.
