Bird's Nest Fern (Asplenium) Care Guide

The Bird's Nest fern is a lush, easy-going fern with bright green fronds that unfurl from a central rosette, the nest that gives it its name. This wavy-leaved form has rippled edges that catch the light. It is softer and more forgiving than most ferns, and a lovely choice for a bright bathroom or kitchen.

Good to know

New fronds appear from the centre of the nest, tightly curled, and slowly unfurl. Try not to handle them while they are young and tender, as they bruise easily and the marks stay. It is non-toxic, so it is safe around pets and children.

Light

Medium, indirect light is ideal. It naturally grows on tree trunks under a canopy, so it is used to filtered, dappled light. Keep it out of direct sun, which scorches the fronds.

Water & humidity

Keep the soil lightly moist but not soggy, and water around the edge of the pot rather than into the centre of the nest, where water can collect and cause rot. Ferns love humidity, so our coastal air suits them, and a bright bathroom is close to ideal.

Feeding

Feed sparingly. A weak, balanced liquid fertiliser once a month through spring and summer is plenty. Too much feed scorches the delicate fronds.

Repotting & soil

Use a light, free-draining mix with plenty of organic matter. Repot in spring only when the plant has clearly outgrown its pot, as it prefers to be a little snug.
