Bangalow Palm (Archontophoenix cunninghamiana) Care Guide

Exotic (Australian)  |  Moderate Care  |  Palm tree

The Bangalow palm is the elegant, subtropical palm with a smooth, ringed, green trunk and a graceful crown of long, arching, feathery fronds. It is more refined and less massive than the Canary Island date palm, which makes it a better fit for medium-sized gardens and residential properties. It brings a lush, tropical feel to a garden and works beautifully planted in groups or as a single specimen.

Good to know

It handles coastal conditions and mild salt exposure, but it is not as tough as the date palm or fan palm: it prefers shelter from the harshest winds, likes more moisture, and does not cope as well with extended drought. That earns it the moderate care rating.

Size

10 to 15 m tall with a relatively compact crown. Trunk typically 20 to 25 cm in diameter.

Growth rate

Moderate to fast in good conditions.

Best uses

Feature palm, group planting, avenue, poolside, courtyard. Suits medium to large gardens.

Light / aspect

Full sun to part shade. Does well in a sheltered, sunny position.

Soil

Prefers fertile, well-drained soil enriched with compost. Handles sandy soil with regular feeding and mulching.

Water requirements

Needs more water than the other two palms. Water regularly, especially in summer and during dry spells. It does not tolerate extended drought well.

Feeding

Feed in spring and autumn with a balanced palm fertiliser. It is hungrier than the tougher palms and responds well to regular feeding.

Pruning

Remove dead fronds as they brown. The trunk is self-cleaning, meaning the old leaf bases drop away on their own.
