Plant Care Guides / Indoor / Easy Care
Despite its name, the asparagus fern is not actually a fern at all, it belongs to the asparagus family. It has soft, feathery, needle-like foliage that arches out in all directions, making it a beautiful hanging basket plant or a lush filler on a shelf. It is tough, fast-growing and very forgiving.
The asparagus fern has small thorns hidden along its stems, so handle it carefully when repotting. It can produce tiny white flowers followed by red berries. It is mildly toxic if the berries are eaten, so keep it out of reach of small children and pets.
Bright, indirect light is ideal, but it copes well in medium light too. Avoid harsh direct sun, which yellows the foliage.
Water regularly through the warmer months, keeping the soil lightly moist but never waterlogged. In winter, reduce watering and let the top layer dry between drinks. It enjoys humidity and appreciates a mist in dry weather.
Feed every two to three weeks through spring and summer with a balanced liquid fertiliser. Ease off in autumn and stop in winter.
The root system is vigorous, with thick, fleshy tubers that store water. Repot when it outgrows its container, usually every year or two. Use a well-draining general potting mix.
