Alternanthera Purple Prince and Harlequin are compact, colourful foliage plants grown for their vivid leaf colour rather than their flowers. Purple Prince has rich, deep burgundy-purple leaves that make a striking contrast against green foliage or silver succulents.
Harlequin has variegated leaves in shades of green, pink and cream. Both form low, dense, bushy mounds that work well as edging, in containers, or as colour accents in beds and borders. They are fast-growing, easy to propagate from cuttings, and handle coastal conditions, heat and moderate drought.
15 to 30 cm tall, about 30 cm wide.
Fast.
Edging, border colour accent, container, mass planting for foliage colour, formal beds. The rich purple of Purple Prince is especially useful as a contrast plant.
Full sun for the most intense leaf colour. They fade to green in too much shade.
Any well-drained soil. Not fussy. Added compost produces lusher growth.
Moderate. Water regularly for the best appearance. Not as drought-tolerant as succulents but copes with occasional dry spells.
A feed every few weeks through the growing season keeps the colour intense and the growth dense.
Trim or pinch regularly to keep the plant compact and bushy. Without trimming it can become leggy. A hard cut-back refreshes it.
