African Daisy (Osteospermum) Care Guide

Indigenous  |  Easy Care  |  Perennials and bulbs

Osteospermums are the showy, South African daisies that produce a riot of colour through spring and summer. The flowers are large and striking, in shades of pink, purple, white, magenta and bicolours, often with contrasting dark centres.

Good to know

They are compact, bushy perennials that work beautifully in borders, beds, containers and mass plantings. They are indigenous, coastal-hardy, wind-tolerant and water-wise once established. The hybrid forms sold at the nursery (like Serenity Rose Magic) have been bred for compact habit and continuous flowering. The flowers open in sunshine and close at night and on overcast days.

Size

30 to 50 cm tall and wide.

Growth rate

Fast. They establish quickly and flower within weeks of planting.

Best uses

Border, mass planting, container, hanging basket, cottage garden, colour bed. Excellent for quick, reliable colour.

Light / aspect

Full sun. They need sun for the flowers to open and for compact growth.

Soil

Any well-drained soil, including sandy and coastal conditions. Not fussy.

Water requirements

Moderate. Water while establishing. Reasonably drought-tolerant once settled, but they flower better with regular moisture.

Feeding

Feed every two to three weeks through the flowering season for the best display.

Pruning

Deadhead spent flowers regularly to keep the display going. Cut the plant back by about half in late summer to encourage a fresh flush for autumn.
