Abelia Care Guide

Exotic  |  Easy Care  |  Medium shrubs

Abelias are elegant, arching, semi-evergreen shrubs that flower over a very long season and are excellent for hedging, borders and mixed plantings. 'Edward Goucher' produces pink, tubular, lightly scented flowers from spring to autumn.

Good to know

Abelia grandiflora has white to pale pink flowers and a graceful arching habit. 'Kaleidoscope' adds variegated foliage in shades of green, gold and red that changes through the seasons. All attract bees and butterflies and have a naturally neat, dense habit that lends itself to hedging or border planting. They handle coastal conditions, moderate wind and some salt exposure, and they are relatively undemanding.

Size

1 to 2 m tall and wide, depending on variety. Easily kept smaller with pruning.

Growth rate

Moderate.

Best uses

Hedge, mixed border, foundation planting, container, cottage garden. The long flowering season makes them valuable in any mixed scheme.

Light / aspect

Full sun to semi-shade. They flower in both, though the display is heavier in sun.

Soil

Any well-drained soil. They prefer slightly acidic to neutral conditions and appreciate compost worked in.

Water requirements

Moderate. Water regularly while establishing, then they cope with occasional dry spells. Not as drought-tolerant as indigenous alternatives.

Feeding

Feed in spring with a balanced fertiliser for the best flowering.

Pruning

Prune lightly after the main flowering flush or in late winter to shape. They respond well to pruning and maintain a naturally tidy habit.
